Guanajuato has a strategic plan to preserve the well-being of Guanajuatenses during the 2024 Rainy Season, reports the Gto Health System.

This plan was projected during the second ordinary session of the State Health Safety Committee, CESSA, which was chaired by Ligia Arce Padilla, State Health Secretary.

During the session that was held virtually, Edgardo Alfredo Rodriguez, Coordinator of the Epidemiological Emergencies, Disasters and Cholera Program, explained that the 2024 rainy season is expected to be intense in most of the 46 municipalities of Guanajuato.

Edgardo reported that the rain season is expected to bring:

  • 9 tropical storms, 5 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes on the coast of the Pacific Ocean
  • While on the Atlantic 12 tropical storms, 6 hurricanes and 5 major hurricanes are expected

This plan contemplates the evaluation for a timely evacuation of people in the areas of highest risk, as well as the detection and supervision in the highest risk areas that meet the basic requirements to go to a shelter.

The Secretary of Health, Ligia Arce explained that the goal is to guarantee security and health, supply and security of food and its adequate distribution among the population, as well as supply of drinking water for the population and domestic animals.

In addition to guaranteeing the offer of mobile health services by creating public health actions, active epidemiological surveillance, health promotion and risk communication.

For this reason, general care actions are contemplated in:

  • Areas of health education
  • Personal and home hygiene
  • Control of health risks in water and food and proper disposal of excreta and garbage
  • General cleaning actions in homes, temporary shelters, markets and places for the preparation and sale of drinks and food

Close surveillance is prepared to prevent illnesses like:

  • Varicella, Hepatitis A, Dengue, Malaria, Leptospirosis, Riketiosis, Dermatitis, Conjunctivitis, and food poisoning

The Gto Health System has:

  • 141 temporary shelters
  • With a capacity to receive up to 25,824 people

Recommendations for civilians are:

  • In case of a thunderstorm, do not take shelter under trees and avoid high places on hills and mountains
  • If you are driving, reduce your speed and extreme caution
  • Avoid crossing rivers, streams, fords and low areas because you can be swept away by the water
  • Avoid traveling in flooded areas because the water can even drag vehicles
  • Do not walk in flooded areas because there may be power lines under water
  • Do not take shelter under trees, bridges or tunnels, because you can be swept away by the flow of water
