San Miguel de Allende won the “City of Excellences” award, a distinction granted by the Excelencias Group at the 47th edition of the Tianguis Turistico de Mexico, in Mexico City.
18 years ago, Grupo Excelencias, with the aim of promoting excellence in different areas related to tourism, gastronomy and culture in Latin America, created the “Excellences Awards”.
In 2023 it maintains the firm intention of continuing to support the tourism industry in Mexico, strengthening communication and disseminating internationally the various tourism products developed by the actors in the country’s value and production chain, explained Jose Carlos de Santiago, president of Grupo Excelencias.
In these awards, 132 Magical Towns and 10 Heritage Cities participated, of which only 27 destinations were finalists, including San Miguel de Allende, a World Heritage City in the category of “City of Excellences”.
Through Caribbean News Digital, more than 150,000 audited votes were received, of which 142,197 remained valid, votes that were cast by a Jury made up of 10 professionals from the tourism industry.
In this category, the jury considered the conservation of architectural, artistic, cultural, gastronomic, social heritage, traditions and all aspects that encompass the preservation of history.
This category was very close, said Consuelo Elipe, director of Grupo Excelencias Mexico, “the finalists were Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende and Puebla.”
Finally, San Miguel de Allende took the prize, which was delivered to Francisco Javier Valverde Polin, General Director of Tourism Development, on behalf of Juan Jose Alvarez Brunel, Secretary of Tourism of the State of Guanajuato.
“Guanajuato is a wonderful place. It is a State that is full of historical, cultural, patrimonial wealth; and one of those jewels is San Miguel de Allende, a destination that received the Award of Excellence as a Heritage City, it is a merit that all San Miguel residents have achieved”, highlighted Valverde Polin.
