Celebrating “Guanajuato, 200 years of Greatness”, the Museum of Art and History of Guanajuato inaugurated the exhibition “The Goddess of Rembrandt’s house. Rembrandt visits Guanajuato”

It is the third time that Rembrandt has been exhibited in Mexico, and the first time that it has been exhibited in Guanajuato from now and until November 5

The Museum of Art and History of Guanajuato –MAHG- inaugurated its new temporary exhibition “The Goddess of Rembrandt’s House”. Rembrandt visits Guanajuato , as part of the special program “Guanajuato, 200 years of greatness”.

The exhibition has been curated by the art historian Héctor Palhares Meza, director of the National Museum of Art –MUNAL-.

This exhibition project has been possible thanks to the Government of the State of Guanajuato through the Cultural Forum, the Ministry of Tourism and the State Institute of Culture, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico and the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature through MUNAL.

Pallas Athena, goddess of wisdom and protector of warriors, has a central place in the Olympian representations of Western art. She is the patron of the city of Athens and giver of the olive wreath, she usually appears accompanied by her main attributes: helmet, spear and shield. Sometimes her himation or her long tunic is replaced by armor, exalting her warlike qualities to achieve and perpetuate victories.

The exhibition is enriched by a splendid portrait of Rembrandt, of some twenty-five years old, attributed to Gerrit Dou (1613-1675), his most prominent disciple.

Like every temporary exhibition, this show is accompanied by a public program , with activities such as:

Museum Night on Wednesdays, August 9, 16, 23, 30 and September 6, 13, 20 at 7:00 p.m.
Series of projections on the great masters of baroque painting on Saturdays in September
Conference “Palas Athena in Dutch painting”, by Ana Leticia Carpizo , deputy director of the MUNAL on Thursday, October 5 at 6:00 pm
Family workshops on weekends
Capsules from the education team of the virtual program Ludoteca, related to this exhibition
All activities are free of charge

The Museum has the possibility of offering special night tours to groups with a minimum of 10 people, from Tuesday to Friday between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., paying the fee of $60.00 per person.

The exhibition “The Goddess of Rembrandt’s house. Rembrandt visits Guanajuato”, will be on display from July 21 to November 5, 2023, from Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Museum of Art and History of Guanajuato –MAHG- is part of the Cultural Forum, one of the most important cultural complexes in Mexico.
