This 2023. La Judea celebrates 150 years of tradition in Purísima del Rincón. From April 5 to 7, the municipality forecasts the attendance of 45,000 people and an economic benefit of 20 million pesos.
The Secretary of Tourism of the State of Guanajuato, through the Directorate of Tourist Products, supports and promotes this Religious Tourism event that promotes the culture and customs of the municipality with the generation of tourist activity, recreation and coexistence among the attendees.
La Judea is a popular theater movement, initiated by the great Hermenegildo Bustos, unique in its modality, in which musicians, Roman and Jewish soldiers participate with masks made by Purisimense artisans, copies of those they made at the time as theater of profane-religious content.
This year, La Judea turns 150 and celebrates it in the Historic Center of Purísima del Rincón. Bustos devised this tradition to give life to the traditional Stations of the Cross; His passion for this tradition was so great that he even designed highly striking masked characters that have preserved his physiognomy to this day.
The distinctive wooden masks of the Judea are made by artisans from the municipality and sarcastically represent the Jewish people, especially the mob that apprehended and killed Jesus.
Although it is a staging and several tricks are used so that the actors get hurt as little as possible, the physical action is very real, in such a way that, after the blows and falls, from time to time an actor ends up with blood in the clothing.
The protagonist of this tradition is the most hated and repudiated traitor of the Catholic religion: Judas Iscariot, that disciple who sold his teacher for a few gold coins.
During the holy days, the inhabitants of Purísima go out with the representative masks: Judas, the Ranchero, the Oriental, Malco, Tiempo, the Major Devil, the Minor Devil and other characters. It is a representation parallel to the Via Crucis, but with a mocking tone, which ends with the desired fatal end of Judas Iscariot.
Year after year, this tradition -the most important in the municipality- takes place in the streets of downtown Purísima. The hours will be: Wednesday: from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
With this festivity, 13 artisans, 7 traditional cooks, and 2 tour operators will also meet to enrich the program. During this event, the municipality will offer 12 hotels with 70 rooms available for visitors.
The Study of the Visitor Profile of the Tourist Observatory of the State of Guanajuato, it was registered that in 2022, 28% of visitors came to the State motivated by Religious Tourism -which correspond to the Cultural Segment-, which represents to 5.9 million visitors, generating an economic benefit of 12 thousand 768 million pesos.
