The Regional Delegation of Education III Leon is proud to have the largest number of members in the Monumental Choir and Orchestra Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, which is currently formed by 300 students from different elementary schools.
The choir director, Alejandro Vivanco Resendiz, has a degree in music and is the coordinator of all the boys and girls who enthusiastically participate in rehearsals and choir activities, without it affecting their studies.
In 2024, this non-profit community music project celebrates its 14th anniversary. Through the lyrics of its songs, mainly of traditional Mexican music, it encourages the preservation of our culture, as with some other popular genres, and invites the public to reflect on the lyrics and context of what we hear in the music and in this way, promote the culture of peace through positive messages.
The Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz choir and orchestra, based at Secondary School No. 17 of Region III Leon, seeks to have a greater impact on the development of socio-emotional skills, using music as the main tool to develop recreational-musical activities.
This musical project is divided into three groups:
- Choir
- Beginner instruments
- Advanced instruments such as guitar, bass, mandolin, melodic flute, trumpet, clarinet, ukulele, drums and voice as the main instrument, where everyone plays and sings, in addition to sharing their knowledge and supporting each other
This is an inclusive choir, as it is not necessary to know how to sing, since the students are taught from zero. In addition, in previous years, students with different abilities participated, since the purpose of the project is to be comprehensive in every sense.
The teachers who cover each school are classroom teachers who were given the tools to be able to form their choirs even without being music teachers. The result has been, every year, the presentation of the Monumental Choir at the Expiatory Temple of Leon, with a Christmas concert that brings together nearly a thousand people who come every year to enjoy what each boy and girl has learned.
The creation of a Monumental Choir made up of basic education students aims to foster musical culture and provide a unique experience for young singers.
The choir also develops teamwork and collaboration, the promotion of cultural diversity and the possibility of learning and appreciating different musical genres, as well as getting to know the traditions and customs of other cultural groups that form part of the choir.
