More than one million 200 thousand students start classes

With school supplies, books, and new spaces: this is how the school year 2025-2026 starts in Guanajuato.

The 2025–2026 school year began in Guanajuato with the return to classes of more than 1.2 million students in 10,544 schools, accompanied by the vocation and commitment of more than 55,000 teachers.

In simultaneous events held in the State’s 46 municipalities, members of the legal and expanded cabinets led the official start of the school year representing Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, who delivered a message to the education communities in which she emphasized that children and adolescents are the most important for Guanajuato and that they have the full affection and attention of the State Government.

 “My girls and boys of Guanajuato, the day has arrived. I am so excited to give you the warmest welcome to the school year. I know you’re excited to see your teachers and classmates, with all your materials ready, because you already have your books, and we’ve already given you your backpacks and school supplies. I want to wish you a great year, that you learn a lot, and that you achieve all your goals. Your Governor is very proud of you. Congratulations, and I send you a heartfelt hug,” said the Governor in her message.

At Urban Elementary School No. 60 “Revolucion Mexicana” in Leon, Luis Ignacio Sanchez Gomez , Secretary of Education, said that during this school year, priorities will focus on helping students achieve reading proficiency, as well as strengthening writing, critical thinking, and logical-mathematical skills.

Sanchez Gomez noted that actions will be promoted to ensure student retention, expand coverage in early childhood, preschool, and high school education, and foster a culture of good behavior in all schools.

The Mayor of Leon Alejandra Gutierrez Campos highlighted the work, dedication, and commitment of teachers, who, she said, are key to improve the conditions and quality of education in the municipality.

As part of its commitment to equity, the State Government delivered 586,621 school kits to public elementary school students, a support that represents direct savings for families. Additionally, in coordination with the Federation, more than 8 million free textbooks were distributed throughout the State.

This school year also began with the opening of 14 new early childhood care premises, including a Child Care Center in the State Capital with capacity for 270 children, and 13 Community Early Childhood Care Centers, which allowed for a three-point increase in coverage. The goal at this level is to increase from 6.8% to 18% by 2030.
