Libia recognizes identity, culture and rights of Indigenous Peoples

The Governor announced that the Primary Health Care Medical Unit (UMAPS) will be built in San Bartolome Aguas Calientes, in Apaseo el Alto

Libia Dennise presented certificates to new indigenous communities registered in the State registry, in the International Day of Indigenous Peoples

The Governor of the People, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, led the commemoration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, and recognized their diversity, culture and rights.

“Thank you for your strength, for your courage, for being the pride that sustains the history of our State. Know this clearly: Guanajuato cannot be understood without its Indigenous Peoples. Let us always remember that we all come from that great history, from that great legacy,” said the State Governor at the commemoration held in San Bartolome Aguas Calientes, Apaseo el Alto.

The groups participating in this event shared rituals, dances, crafts, gastronomy, traditional medicine, and artistic expressions that keep the memory of the communities alive.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is commemorated on August 9, based on a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in 1994, and as part of this commemoration, the Governor presented 10 certificates to new communities registered in the State registry, as an act of historical justice and vindication of their cultural treasures.

Guanajuato could not be understood without its indigenous peoples; the hospitality, work ethic, and community spirit of the Otomi or Hñöhñö people, as well as the strength and spirit of the Chichimeca Ezar or Jonaz people, are an essential part of Guanajuato’s identity.

After 12 years without modifications to the Registry, in 2026 its update was promoted and indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities were called upon to request their registration through a procedure that respects self-identification and free determination.

Governor Libia Dennise announced that this year the Primary Health Care Medical Unit (UMAPS) will be built in San Bartolome Aguas Calientes (the event’s location) in Apaseo El Alto, with an investment of 24.8 million pesos in infrastructure and 2.3 million pesos in equipment.

“We must not only respect them, we must preserve them for future generations, we must feel proud of their legacy. As Governor, I join not only in this commemoration, but also in this respect that we in Guanajuato feel for our senior citizens, for our Indigenous women and men, who fill Guanajuato with pride,” said the Governor.
