“We must write history, it is not enough to leave it in memory; it is important to know and say what happened, but it is better to leave it on paper”, said Governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo, at the presentation of the book ‘Leon en la Piel, Estampas de nuestra curtiduria en el tiempo’.
The book presents a historiographical investigation on tannery in Leon; emphasizes the origins prior to the formal foundation of Villa de Leon, its development in the Barrio de la Canal and the Barrio de Arriba, in addition to its social, technological, economic and territorial condition, with significant challenges in the present and the future from the city.
“This book ‘Leon en la piel’, presents images of our tannery over time, of how the industry of greatness is traversed, of a fundamental and foundational activity of our city”, said the Governor.
“This book honors memory and history. Leon is not understood and Guanajuato is not understood, without tannery”, said the Governor.
This work carried out by Rodolfo Herrera Perez and co-published by the State Institute of Culture and Tlacuilo Ediciones, presents the beginning and development of the tannery based on the documents of the Municipal Historical Archive of Leon.
The book reveals the names of the first master tanners, ancestral techniques and ingredients, details of tanneries that were worked for generations in colonial times, as well as tanners who, in the face of the discoveries of subsequent centuries, adopted new techniques, found other markets and entered into new markets in the global dynamics.
“Our tannery is a great example that work conquers everything; It is a pride to be from Leon, to be from Guanajuato. The greatness of Guanajuato is not understood if those who came before us are not considered,” said the Governor.
In Leon, he said, operating is the 71 percent of the total tanneries registered in Mexico, and today this industry in Leon is an important supplier of leather for the automotive and aerospace industries, since high-end car and airplanes seats are made here, for example.
“Today the challenge is enormous, because you have to work a lot with human capital and with industry 4.0,” said the Governor.
Rodolfo Herrera Perez, author of the book, said that it arose from a dialogue with the editor Leopoldo Navarro and they carried out the investigation; they found how the tannery arose in the cattle ranches in the 16th century.
“Leon is an important city and we are the greatness of this State, we must share our history and make it known to the new generations,” said Herrera Perez.
