Health reinforces detection of tuberculosis

The Secretary of Health of Guanajuato increases the practice of bacilloscopies for the detection of tuberculosis

The Secretary of Health carried out a total of 26,898 bacilloscopies and another 2,819 this year for the timely detection of tuberculosis in the 46 municipalities of Guanajuato.

The Secretary of Health, Gabriel Cortes Alcala, reported that this is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is transmitted through the air via droplets expelled when a sick person coughs, sneezes, or speaks.

In relation to the analysis of the bacilloscopies carried out for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in Guanajuato during the period 2020–2026 there is a significant increase in screenings.

Comprehensive and completely free treatment is available for all people who test positive for tuberculosis, guaranteeing timely access to medications, clinical follow-up and treatment supervision, in accordance with disease control guidelines.

This strengthens the detection and control strategy, ensuring that identified cases receive care free of charge and reduce the risk of community transmission.

Although it mainly affects the lungs, it can occur in other organs (extrapulmonary tuberculosis). It is important to go to the nearest People’s Health Center if you have symptoms in order to receive timely care.

The Secretary of Health said that the symptoms of this disease are a cough with phlegm for more than two weeks, hemoptysis, chest pain, and dyspnea, besides  the patient may present persistent fever, night sweats, weight loss, asthenia and adynamia and anorexia, bone or joint and abdominal pain.

Tuberculosis continues to pose a public health challenge, making it essential to strengthen prevention, early detection, and treatment adherence efforts, prioritizing vulnerable groups and inter-institutional coordination.

Cortes added that in Guanajuato, the active search for opportunities to conduct Tuberculosis screenings in the population using health services is constantly being maintained.

This strategy presents an opportunity to strengthen the timely identification of cases, expand contact tracing, and reinforce preventive and control actions, contributing to the reduction of transmission and the burden of the disease.
