Guanajuato consolidates its leadership as one of the country’s main producers of tequila agave, thanks to having seven municipalities with a tequila designation of origin:

  • Abasolo, Cueramaro, Huanimaro, Manuel Doblado, Penjamo, Purisima del Rincon and Romita

This production allows for the creation of one of Mexico’s most representative beverages and strengthens an industry that generates economic development for Guanajuatense families.

Under the vision of the People’s Governor, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, the Secretary of Economy promotes the agro-food sector as one of the strategic pillars for the economic growth of Guanajuato, promoting the use of productive vocations and the strengthening of value chains.

During 2025, Guanajuato registered tequila exports for more than 13.7 million dollars and 1.1 million liters, while in 2024 the production of tequila agave exceeded 401 thousand tons, with an annual value of more than 7 billion pesos.

These numbers position Guanajuato as the second largest producer of agave for tequila in Mexico. Together with Jalisco and Michoacán, the state contributes 81% of national production, solidifying the central-western region as the main hub for the development of this industry.

Furthermore, the tequila production chain generates more than 260 direct jobs and registers an annual production value exceeding 390 million pesos, contributing to the economic development of the producing regions and strengthening one of the activities with the greatest identity for Guanajuato.

The Secretary of Economy, Claudia Cristina Villasenor Aguilar, invited producers to continue strengthening this industry and take advantage of the opportunities offered by the designation of origin, a distinction that positions Guanajuato among the states with the greatest potential for the production of quality tequila.

Every July 24th, National and International Tequila Day is commemorated, a date that recalls the declaration of the Agave Landscape and the Old Industrial Facilities of Tequila as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a recognition granted in 2006 that highlights the historical, cultural and productive value of this emblematic Mexican beverage.
