Guanajuato adapts to climate change, creating environmental resilience for social and economic well-being

In Guanajuato, the protection of natural resources, with conservation works, undertaken by the State Government through the Ministry of Environment and Territorial Planning –SMAOT-, allows -among other benefits-, to mitigate the effects of climate change and develop an adaptation framework based on ecosystems.
During 2022, soil conservation works were carried out such as:
- Vats, filter dams, and geocoastals
- In more than 468 hectares
- In 31 municipalities with the presence of State Protected Natural Areas –ANP-
- 9 conservation works each week of the year on average
- Two thirds of the state territory were covered
The head of the SMAOT, Maria Isabel Ortiz Mantilla, said that Guanajuato responds in a comprehensive and articulated way, with adaptation measures to climate change based on ecosystems and ecological restoration, in order to preserve and recover the natural heritage of Guanajuatenses.
Therefore, the environmental impact generated by industrial activities in Guanajuato is duly identified for remediation through the Strategic Environmental Compensation Program -PECSA-.
PECSA is unique in Mexico, and its goal is to compensate the environmental factors affected by the development of projects through a series of appropriate measures in priority areas for the generation of environmental services.
In coordination with the General Direction of Natural Resources of the Secretary, coordinated actions are undertaken with the municipalities, ANP inhabitants and companies to reduce environmental impacts.
Through compensation actions, 246 companies operating in Guanajuato have remedied the impacts generated, in addition, firms such as Volkswagen and Pirelli adopted ANP in which each year they undertake actions for the conservation of the environment.
Likewise, part of the strategy for the conservation of our natural resources is the prevention and care of forest fires.
In coordination with federal and municipal agencies from 2019 to 2022, 126 forest fires have been attended.
In the last 4 years, actions have been carried out in more than 4 thousand 900 hectares with reforestation actions, soil works, sanitary pruning and direct seeding in order to restore the affected vegetation covers, this is the care of 3 hectares per day, from the beginning of the State Administration.
