While a 3% drop in lettuce production was reported nationwide, in Guanajuato the cultivation of this vegetable grew and has been on the rise for more than a decade, making the state the national leader and ninth largest producer in the world.
The Ministry of Agriculture reported that the municipalities with the highest production of this vegetable, which are San Miguel de Allende, Juventino Rosas and Dolores Hidalgo, increased their production value by 16.9% in 2023, compared to 2022, which indicates that producers received $37 million pesos more.
Regarding production, 5,537 more tons were generated in Guanajuato in 2023 than in 2022; a growth of 3.8%.
These results are the result of the work of the agricultural producers of Guanajuato, to whom the State Government has given its support through advice and infrastructure support. And it is expected that in this New Beginning, the Government of the People will strengthen the development of the producers with a comprehensive and entrepreneurial vision that will enhance their cultivation and commercialization.
In 2023, lettuce production was 151,245 tons, with a production value of $763,470,435 pesos, according to information from the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP).
As of September 30, the harvest of 112,201 tons of the vegetable has been reported, so production is expected to grow again this year.
These figures make Guanajuato proud, as for more than a decade it has remained the leading national producer, over states such as Zacatecas, Puebla, Aguascalientes and Baja California. And at the national level, the state has 25.6% of the national production of lettuce.
