Two Guanajuatense artisans were awarded in the 12th Edition of the National Contest of Great Masters of the Artisan Heritage of Mexico 2025, an event organized by the National Fund for the Promotion of Handicrafts (Fonart) with the support of Fomento Cultural Banamex, the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL) through the Museum of the Palace of Fine Arts, and the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI).
The Guanajuatense winners are:
Abel Avalos Guerrero, of Dolores Hidalgo, Cradle of National Independence, for his work “Jineteando,” a clay charro hat made using the high-temperature droplet technique, adorned with mariachi figures, folkloric ballet dancers, and a horseman
Juan Carlos Salgado Crespo of Salamanca, with the piece “Virgin Immaculate Conception”, a molded and modeled beeswax sculpture, dyed with natural pigments such as earth and oils, and dressed in fabrics waxed with natural wax
The head of the Secretary of Economy, Claudia Cristina Villasenor Aguilar, said that in Guanajuato, traditional sectors are being transformed by adding value through the differentiation and quality of each artisanal piece.
The winners were selected by a jury specializing in folk art and tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
Guanajuato’s handicrafts reflect the region’s deep-rooted identity and traditions and are a fundamental pillar of the economy for many families, who take advantage of their municipalities’ productive vocations to create these artistic expressions.
In Guanajuato there are thirteen distinctive craft manifestations, including:
- Wool weaving, tinwork, wood carving, cartoneria, majolica ceramics, folk toys, jewelry, wax and stone sculpture, saddlery, hat making, metalwork, and souvenir production
The People’s Government adds value to artisanal products and generates new opportunities that improve the quality of life of Guanajuatense artisans. With this vision, Guanajuato reaffirms its commitment to artisanal talent, positioning its creations as a cultural and economic driving force.
