“The phenomenon of migration is very complex and requires the support of organizations specialized in the matter,” said Juan Hernandez, Secretary for Migrants and International Affairs of the Government of Guanajuato.
A history in migratoion
During his message at the Regional Meeting on Best Practices in Migration Policy between local governments of Mexico, Honduras, Panama and Costa Rica, the head of the SMEI said that, for example, Guanajuato has a deeply rooted history in terms of migration, so much so that All Guanajuatenses have at least one migrant family member, friend or acquaintance.
A route to the North
He mentioned that thousands of people from other countries go through our territory on their way to the northern border of Mexico and the southern border of the United States.
“That is why in 2021, Guanajuato joined the Migration Governance Indicators at the local level implemented by the IOM”, said Hernandez.
A permanent ally
Hernandez said that the instruction of Governor Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo is that Guanajuato must be a permanent ally of migrants and their families, that is why from the heart of Mexico efforts are joined with associations such as the National Coordinator of Migrant Assistance Offices, CONOFAM, IOM and UNHCR, among other, to adopt best practices.
Hernandez said that in Guanajuato the course is clear and new challenges were identified:
- Seek the multiplier effect of remittances through agreements with COPARMEX, the Mexican Association of Women Entrepreneurs, and with the GTO Brand and strengthen the relationship with the ISSEG to expand the number of pharmacies that receive remittances through the CLUB ISSEG Card – Migrant
- Multiply efforts to generate more co-investment projects with migrants and create companies that boost the local economy
- Promote an employment list that we have with the Secretary for Sustainable Economic Development
- Develop a Research Center that generates knowledge, promotes analysis and consolidates public policies focused on the reality of current migration, which, as we know, changes day by day
Links of hospitality
“From Guanajuato we adopt actions that let us better serve migrants and their families. That is why we strengthen the links of hospitality and interculturality with the 20 international communities that add up to some 42 thousand foreigners who live in our state to promote the generation of productive chains”, said the Secretary.
