The Secretary of Economy of the Government of Mexico issued in the Official Journal of the Federation the resolution to start an administrative process to investigate dumping procedures on imports of shoes coming to Mexico from China, no matter what country they originated in.

The National Chamber of the Shoe Industry -CANAICAL- and the Chamber of the Shoe Industry of the State of Guanajuato -CICEG- informed that this investigation has the purpose of establishing the damage that has been made to Mexico’s shoe industry as imports from China have grown.

In the Official Journal, the Secretary of Economy said that it has detected a considerable increase in imports of shoes from China at considerably low prices compared with prices in Mexico’s industry.

Figures show that in 2023 imports were for 120 million pairs, of which half were from China, while in the first quarter of 2024 imports from China show an increase well above what the market is growing, and today imports from China already represent more than 45% of the total value of the shoes that are sold in Mexico.

CANAICAL and CICEG said that they are trying to build an even level to compete in a fair international trade and to promote Mexico´s industry.

According to the Official Journal the products that are subject to this investigation include: Boots with synthetic cuts and soles, basic sandals, formal and dress shoes with synthetic cut and sole; low cut sports tennis shoes with synthetic cut and sole; casual shoes with textile cut and synthetic sole, and basic, formal and dress sandals with textile cut and synthetic sole.

CANAICAL and CICEG thank Secretary of Economy for starting this investigation, as well as the Confederation of Industrial Chambers of the United States of Mexico -CONCAMIN- for its lobbying to have this investigation started and to strengthen the national shoe industry.

Also, CANAICAL and CICEG are sure that the Unit of International Trade Practices -UITP- of the Secretary of Economy will do a professional investigation abiding to technical criteria.
