The People’s Government through the Environmental and Territorial Planning Office (PAOT) commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the decree that created the Cerro de Arandas Protected Natural Areas in the municipality of Irapuato and the La Purisima Dam in the municipality of Guanajuato.

Karina Padilla Avila, head of the PAOT, noted the importance of these two sites for the benefit of the State’s environment, in addition to emphasizing the efforts made by the agency’s environmental promoters to publicize the benefits that the areas bring to the environment.

Padilla said that, under the instructions of the Governor of the People, Libia Denisse Muñoz Ledo, constant tours are carried out with the support of the Environmental Guards of the PAOT to promote the care of the Protected Natural Areas and bring benefit to the State environment.
Located NorthWest of the municipality of Irapuato and bordering the City is the Cerro de Arandas area. This protected natural area is an important recharge zone for the Silao-Romita aquifer, a vital refuge for resident and migratory birds, and a key perching area for the Monarch butterfly on its migration through the State of Guanajuato.

In its area there are also natural monuments of historical relevance such as the Cerro del Piloncillo and part of the Cerro de Arandas, where archaeological remains have been found.
The prevailing climate is dry sub-humid with summer rains. The types of vegetation present are: xerophytic scrubland, tropical deciduous forest, grassland, and aquatic and subaquatic vegetation.
The area is home to 205 species of fauna, with 50 species in some category of risk and/or endemic, and 245 species of flora, with 3 species in the category of risk in the NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010.

The La Purisima Dam area is of high importance in the recharge of the Silao-Romita aquifer; the body of water receives the tributaries of the rivers Guanajuato, Chapin and La Trinidad, it has three types of vegetation: tropical deciduous forest, aquatic and subaquatic vegetation and xerophytic scrubland, it is home to 215 species of fauna with 43 species with some category of risk and/or endemic, and 137 species of flora with 2 species in the NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010.

The Cerro del Sombrero is home to pre-Hispanic remains.
Both sites were declared ANP on November 25, 2005 through government decrees number 248 for Cerro de Arandas and 249 for Presa La Purisima and its area of influence.
