MALECOLOR 100 YEARS: Urban art marks the centenary of the organized footwear industry in Leon
Leon/Gto News
The Chamber of the Footwear Industry of the State of Guanajuato (CICEG) led the creation of MALECOLOR 100 Years of Shoemaking Pride, an artistic manifestation that transformed 120 linear meters of the Malecon del Rio into a monumental mural commemorating a century of the organized footwear sector.

In alignment with the 450th anniversary of Leon, this project was realized through a strategic partnership with 24 leading footwear brands and urban artists. This collective work projects identity, creativity, and a forward-looking vision as a lead-up to the prestigious SAPICA trade fair.

A Legacy of Competitiveness and Global Reach
The unveiling ceremony was presided over by Carlos Torres Barrientos, Technical Secretary of the Leon 450 Committee, representing Mayor of Leon, Ale Gutierrez; Luis Andres Alvarez Aranda, State Undersecretary of Employment and Labor Training, representing Governor Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo; and CICEG and CANAICAL President, Juan Carlos Cashat Usabiaga.

Cashat Usabiaga highlighted the industry’s competitiveness, export capacity, and the enduring legacy that has defined Leon’s economic history. The event also featured municipal chronicler Luis Alegre Vega, who detailed the historic role of shoemaking in building the city, and urban artist “BROTE,” the project’s creative lead, who explained the visual narrative merging tradition with innovation.
Industrial Unity: The Backbone of the Sector
Several iconic companies from the local cluster actively joined this commemorative intervention, demonstrating the unity and strength of the organized industry.

Participating brands include:
- Flexi, Flexi Country, Quirelli, Yuyin, Berrendo, Coloso, Elefante, Tropicana
- Lady Paulina, Vavito, Capa de Ozono, Grupo Triples, Jarking, Calzado Coqueta
- Chabelo, Pirma, Salamandra, Dante, Vaqueras, Colonial, Vandeci, and Cuadra

Looking Toward the Future
MALECOLOR 100 YEARS makes it clear: the footwear industry is not only celebrating its rich history but is also determinedly projecting its future. This initiative strengthens the sector’s positioning ahead of SAPICA, consolidating Leon’s status as the Footwear Capital of Mexico.
The unveiling was attended by top executives from the footwear, leather, and tanning sectors, as well as State and Municipal Officials, marking a unified front for the industry’s next century of growth.
