“In the People’s Government, we are convinced that culture is not a luxury, but a right and a tool for social transformation,” said Governor Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, at the inauguration of the 37th edition of the Leon National Book Fair (FENAL), which this year is being held as part of the celebrations of the city’s 450th anniversary.

“Today, as Governor, as a woman, as a mother, as a Leones, I wish that we continue to lull our children to sleep surrounded by stories, that we continue to see ourselves reflected in literature and books,” said Libia Dennise.

This year’s Book Fair runs from May 1st to 10th, featuring a broad and diverse program, 225 publisher booths, over 500 participating imprints, 349 literary and artistic activities, as well as workshops, book presentations, and training sessions. An attendance of over 100,000 people is expected.

During the opening ceremony, the “Commitment to Literature” award was presented, this time honoring writer Ángeles Mastretta, one of the most representative voices of contemporary Mexican literature, and Hector Gomez Vargas, for his contribution to the study of Leon’s cultural life. This is the first time this award has been granted to two authors.

The Guanajuato government is making significant efforts to strengthen this fair. Through the Marca Guanajuato initiative, local talent is being promoted; the Secretary of Education is supporting public speaking and storytelling contests for students; and the Secretary of Culture has a booth, a reading room, and its own programming within the event.

The Governor spoke about the “Read on Time” strategy, which aims to strengthen early literacy, reading comprehension, and a love of books from a young age. Currently, more than 90% of public schools participate in this strategy, with thousands of teachers trained and materials distributed throughout Guanajuato.

Through the State network of public libraries and community activities, thousands of actions are carried out each year to promote reading, reaching hundreds of thousands of people throughout the State territory.

With the Governor of Guanajuato were municipal and State Officials.
