The People’s Government, through the Environmental and Territorial Planning Attorney’s Office (PAOT), invites citizens to avoid using green moss and hanging moss during the Holiday season to prevent damage to the ecosystems of Guanajuato.

NOM-011-SEMARNAT-1996 classifies green moss and hanging moss as species of wild flora, therefore their extraction, transport and sale must be carried out in a controlled manner.
The regulation protects these species due to their important ecological functions, such as moisture retention, soil erosion prevention, and forest temperature regulation.

Green moss and hanging moss play a crucial role in ecosystems by acting as natural sponges, helping prevent floods and droughts. They also facilitate the growth of other plants and harbor a wide variety of microorganisms.
Green moss is a small plant that grows on damp, shady surfaces such as rocks, logs, and soil. It is a bryophyte, meaning it lacks a true vascular system for transporting water and nutrients.

Despite its size, it plays a crucial ecological role by retaining water, regulating humidity, preventing erosion, serving as a habitat for small organisms, and contributing to soil formation.
Hanging moss is a grayish herb that grows on tree branches with hanging stems in the form of a very thin thread, so in the rainy season it captures water from the environment and forms hanging curtains on the trees, increasing the relative humidity of the forests.

Korean grass is an alternative to green moss that can grow in spaces with direct sun or partial shade and requires moderate care, with watering 3 times a week in summer and pruning about 3 times a year.
Unlike green moss, which prefers shade and moisture, Korean grass is more drought-resistant and grows in clumps or lumps that create an uneven surface.
