Secure doors and windows, check gas and electric installations, simulate activity, rely on trusted neighbors, and use of technology are some preventive measures to avoid burglaries in homes and businesses during summer vacation

Guanajuato/Gto News

Although home protection must be maintained 365 days a year, it is advisable to increase security actions during vacation periods to prevent burglaries in homes and businesses that are temporarily unoccupied.

The Secretary of Security and Peace of the People’s Government recommends the following preventive measures to deter intruders who take advantage of summer vacation to break into homes and burglarize them, as well as to protect properties from potential incidents such as leaks or short circuits.

Preventive measures include securing doors and windows, reinforcing the installation of security systems and engaging with neighbors, avoiding posting on social media about the period you will be away, and ensuring the property appears occupied.

1. Reinforce doors and windows

Before leaving, check that locks and hinges are in good condition and secure. Reinforce doors and windows with mechanisms that prevent them from being opened from the outside, and avoid leaving valuables such as documents, jewelry, or money in plain sight.

2. Simulate activity at home

A home that appears occupied is less prone to burglary. Timers can be installed to turn on lights, televisions, or radios at different times of the day. It’s also a good idea to have a trusted person perform simple tasks, such as taking out the trash, checking the mailbox, or sweeping the front of the house.

3. Use technology

Installing alarms, remote monitoring cameras, motion sensors, and smart locks enhances security, allowing you to respond quickly to any suspicious activity.

4. Be careful with social networks

Avoid sharing on social media that you’re going on vacation. Doing so is a way to let people know when your home will be closed.

5. Communication with trusted people

It’s a good idea to inform a family member or close friend about your period of absence and ask them to check on the home periodically. Their presence can be crucial in unexpected situations.

6. Where to leave the keys?

No one is immune to losing their keys, especially when on vacation. Instead of hiding a copy in flowerpots or under the doormat, it’s better to leave it safely with someone you trust.

7. Adequate exterior lighting

Installing motion-sensing lights in patios, driveways, or gardens can deter outsiders from entering the property.

8. Observe the surrounding and stay informed

If you see strangers wandering around the area or behaving suspiciously before leaving on your trip, report it anonymously and safely to 089. Your report can make all the difference.

9. Fire and leak prevention

Situations such as short circuits or gas leaks can cause significant damage. It’s advisable to turn off gas and water lines before leaving for vacation, and to unplug televisions, microwave ovens, chargers, and, in general, all types of appliances that will not be in use during the period the home will be unoccupied.
