The Secretary of Security and Peace of Guanajuato shares a series of recommendations to ensure safe vehicular traffic on the State’s roads during the summer vacation and ensure that local, national, and international tourists arrive safely at their destinations.

Before starting the trip:

• Make sure you bring your valid driver’s license, registration card, insurance policy, and proof of vehicle inspection
• Check the oil, brake fluid, and windshield washer levels, as well as the proper functioning of the high and low beams, turn signals, and blinkers
• Carry a spare tire, hydraulic jack, flashlight, power cord, safety triangle, fire extinguisher, and reflective vest
• If any of your vehicle’s tires show significant wear, replace it to ensure your safety and that of your passengers
• If necessary, replace the windshield wiper blades

Make sure the route you’re traveling isn’t affected by any setbacks, such as road closures or landslides, and find out which hospitals, hotels, or gas stations are located along the roads on your route.

Do not overload the vehicle: excess weight reduces stability and lengthens braking distance.

If you’re traveling with pets, use a suitable carrier or a special harness that attaches to the seat belt. Never carry pets loose inside the vehicle, as they can distract the driver or be injured in the event of sudden braking. Bring them water and food, and make sure to take breaks so they can rest and stay hydrated.

During the trip

Always wear your seat belt. Children under 13 years of age must ride in the back seat, using an appropriate child restraint system.

Before starting, check that the vehicle is locked and make sure you don’t leave any people or valuables inside. Take a look at the back seat.

Avoid using your cell phone while driving. If you need to make or answer a call, pull over to a safe place and turn on your hazard lights.

Obey speed limits and traffic signs. Don’t drive under the influence of alcohol, medications that cause drowsiness, or any other drugs: they affect coordination, judgment, perception, and reaction time, all of which are essential for safe and responsible driving.

In case of rain, reduce your speed, turn on your lights and increase your distance from other vehicles.

Take breaks every two hours to stretch your legs and rest. This improves your focus and reduces the risk of accidents.

Be alert to road conditions and signs, especially in rural, mountainous, or foggy areas.
