Hundreds of people take advantage of Holy Week to travel and take a break from their daily routines. During these holidays, when homes are empty, it’s important to remember that prevention and home security are a priority if you want peace of mind.
The Secretary of Security and Peace makes a series of recommendations for those planning to go on vacation.
Make sure all doors and windows close properly and that locks work properly. If necessary, install deadbolts or additional security systems on main and secondary doors. Look for unsafe areas from inside and outside the house. Avoid making it obvious that the house is unoccupied but has possessions inside. Install a motion-sensing light.
It is recommended to store jewelry, accessories, and easy-to-use appliances in a safe or take them to the home of a relative who won’t be traveling on vacation; these are the items burglars typically seek to steal.
Since burglars can strike at any time, it’s a good idea to notify trusted neighbors so that if they hear strange noises inside the property, they can alert security forces using emergency numbers such as:
– 089 for anonymous reports
– 911 for medical, police, and civil protection emergencies
It’s also advisable not to post about your vacation on social media and avoid loading suitcases into a taxi or car on the street, as these are clues that thieves can use to act freely at any time of day.
Other recommendations to consider include removing ladders from patios and gardens to prevent burglars from using them to gain entry; unplugging electrical appliances, turning off the gas supply and main water valves, and not leaving pets alone.
