Guanajuato consolidates its prevention and control strategies almost 5 years after the Covid 19 pandemic that led to change the life of millions

Five years after the start of the Covid 19 pandemic, the Government of the People through the State Health Secretary consolidated its prevention and control strategies that have made it possible to reduce the incidence of the virus.
Health Secretary Gabriel Cortes Alcala said that the disease is still present and requires constant monitoring to prevent new outbreaks and protect the most vulnerable population.
The experience gained over the years has strengthened the State health system, allowing it to be better prepares for future health emergencies.
The Secretary of Health said that the pandemic marked a before and after in public health, promoting new monitoring and response practices against viral respiratory diseases.
However, the virus continues to circulate and, although the number of cases is lower, epidemiological surveillance remains active.
As of epidemiological week 8 of 2025, 25 confirmed cases and one death have been registered.
Cortes Alcala noted that following the WHO’s declaration in May 2023 on the end of the health emergency, CONAVE established in September of the same year that Covid 19 surveillance would be carried out through the Sentinel Surveillance system.
This new approach allows for strategic monitoring without the need to count each case individually, focusing on identifying emerging trends and variants.
In Guanajuato, 14 sentinel units operate, their objective is to monitor the circulation of the virus and its trends in order to act in a timely manner in the event of a possible resurgence:
- 10% of cases of mild respiratory illness are studied
- 100% of severe cases (SARI) and suspected deaths due to viral pneumonia are monitored
- Samples are analyzed in specialized laboratories to identify circulating variants
Over the past five years, the response to Covid 19 has evolved with the new strategies, including the use of advanced technologies for outbreak detection, vaccination booster campaigns, and increased training of medical personnel for the management of post-pandemic respiratory diseases.
Guanajuato has increased investment in hospitals and care units to strengthen the response capacity to possible surges, in addition to the implementation of awareness and health education campaigns and the digitalization of health services.
