“Guanajuato is the epicenter of Voices for Peace, which is why we are proud that our state is the headquarters of a valuable space for reflection and dialogue for peace”, said the Secretary of the State Government, Jesus Oviedo Herrera, present on behalf of Governor Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo.
“Today we welcome with great pleasure the international personalities and global leaders who will be participating, sharing their experience and thoughts to promote a culture of peace in Mexico and throughout the world. So we welcome journalists and opinion leaders who will be enriching this exercise”, said Oviedo Herrera as he inaugurated the First Ibero-American Voices for Peace Meeting.
The Official said, “we want these Voices for Peace to also become actions for peace. The reflections expressed here lead us to take the next step to promote this culture of peace in all possible spaces: in the family, at work, at school, in the streets and squares, and in our daily attitude towards our fellow men”.
“Peace is not just the absence of war; it is respect for others, for the dignity of people, for their rights, for their individuality. It is respect for the rule of law, social coexistence and public spaces”, said Oviedo.
The Secretary of Government emphasized that social peace can only be built with the participation and commitment of all.
He added that “we have to condemn the war, ask that it end in the world and above all that it not lead us to a new world conflict, but that does not mean that we should start with peace and harmony in our own homes, in our colonies, in our cities as the way to rebuild the social fabric”.
“The message in this event is one: to promote a culture of peace. Here in Guanajuato, we like to work as a team, society and government, and more on this issue. We have to replicate this effort in all the countries of the world and especially in Latin America, which are the voices that accompany us today”, noted the Secretary of Government.
“I invite you to take this message to all corners, to take this banner of peace to all countries, to take this culture to all geographies. We want the message and the reflections of this First Meeting to be heard beyond our borders”, said Oviedo.
This ceremony was attended by the President of Somos Iberoamérica Periodismo por la Paz -SOIPAZ- Jorge Robledo Vega, who highlighted that in Guanajuato for three days, the voice of opinion leaders will be heard to promote peace in the Ibero-American nations.
The program of activities of “Voices for Peace” includes the participation of voices and journalists for peace from different countries such as:
- Alberto Pelaez, from Spain, who is a journalist, novelist, correspondent of 20 wars
- Ana Barrero, journalist, Director of the Culture of Peace Foundation in Madrid
- Gonzalo E. Caceres, Co-Founder of Deutsche Welle TV Germany, from Chile
- Pablo Latapí, Mexican communicator and Editorial Director of the newspaper El Economista
- Shirin Ebadi, 2003 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, gave the keynote address “Women’s participation in peace processes”
- Former president of Colombia, Andrés Pastrana, gave the conference “Macro-decisions of a leader for peace”
