The first voluntary carbon market will be created in Guanajuato

The State Government through the Ministry of the Environment and Territorial Planning –SMAOT-, in collaboration with the Mexican Carbon Platform -MÉXICO2- will develop the first voluntary carbon market for the state of Guanajuato.
Through the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding –MoU- climate change mitigation and adaptation activities and projects will be developed that contribute to the regional and national emission reduction goals.
This collaboration consists in that, through a voluntary carbon market, companies and the financial sector will be able to join directly in the fight against climate change, with this instrument, greenhouse gas emissions will have a financial cost, so all those who are part of the initiative, will adopt the responsibility assuming the payment that corresponds to them for each ton emitted.
The Memorandum was signed on the side of SMAOT, by the Secretary Maria Isabel Ortiz Mantilla and the Undersecretary for Environmental Management, Climate Change and Energy Sustainability, Sandra Herrera Flores; while on the side of MÉXICO2, its General Director, Eduardo Piquero signed the document.
“The bet is the development of Guanajuato in an orderly and sustainable manner, and this is sustainability, these are concrete examples to assume that roadmap that humanity proposes to us from this corner of the planet, we have to do the part that corresponds to us, economically we know that many companies are committed to it, that is why this signing of this agreement allows us to work together to develop this voluntary carbon market that we will be promoting to be regional, starting from Guanajuato, with that commitment”, assured Ortiz Mantilla.
The General Director of MÉXICO2, Eduardo Piquero, assured that the collaboration with the Government of Guanajuato, through SMAOT, is framed through the project “Consolidation of the Mexican Climate Financing Hub” financed by the British Government, with the objective of promoting financial mechanisms for the reduction of cost-effective emissions in the western Mexican lowlands.
“Our goal is for the Bajío-Occidente region to be a leader not only in Mexico but throughout Latin America in offsetting emissions, in generating projects and in everything that will change people’s lives, better jobs, greater distribution of the benefits not only economic but also environmental and a lot of technology transfer” mentioned Piquero.
This cooperation is supported through the financial support of the UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions) program of the Government of the United Kingdom.
