The 6th edition of the Mezcal Festival in San Felipe will take place on August 2, 3 and 4 in Jaral de Berrio, the town has a great tradition in the production of this traditional drink since the 18th century.
Agave cultivation is well in this destination in the State of Guanajuato, since it has sufficient natural and human factors for the production of this spirit drink. San Felipe is within the list of municipalities that includes the territory of origin indicated in the general declaration of protection of the Mezcal appellation of origin, published on November 28, 1994 in the Official Gazette of the Federation.
Francisco Javier Valverde Polin, General Director of Tourism Development, representing Juan Jose Alvarez Brunel, Secretary of Tourism of the State of Guanajuato, and with Eduardo Maldonado Garcia, Mayor of San Felipe, gave the details of this festival that awaits some 40 thousand attendees.
This year, Guanajuato residents and tourists will taste a variety of agave species at this festival, of which the predominant one is the Agave Salmiana -also known as green agave or mezcalero- from 100 Guanajuato producers and artisans who make products from the maguey.
For three days, in the Main Plaza of the Jaral de Berrio Community -a place where a few decades ago they produced large quantities of mezcal- attendees will delight in the variety of products, tasting delicious traditional food, appreciating the artistic shows, and being impressed with the agave landscape and with the history and architecture of the former hacienda of Jaral de Berrio -currently out of operation-, an important producer of mezcal in Mexico in the first half of the 20th century.
At this fiesta there will also be mezcal tastings, magical nights, concerts, and the best mezcals from the producers participating in this edition will be awarded, focused mainly on promoting tourism to San Felipe, promoting economic benefits to producers, visitors and the destination.
