During the fourth edition of the international event “She is Global Forum 2023”, Mexico and Guanajuato were represented in the field of security, by the Executive Secretary of the State Security System of Guanajuato, Sophia Huett Lopez.
During her participation in the “Women in State Security” panel, the Guanajuatense woman recounted the entry of women into different international corporations, making a hard analysis that at the beginning they were assigned to auxiliary and even janitorial tasks, in some cases with no the right to wear a uniform.
The panel was shared with Marcela Garcia Aceves, Executive Director of the Bussiness Alliance For Secure Commerce Mexico, who noted that there is also a greater female presence in the private sector every day in strategic tasks for the protection of goods and processes. The moderation was by Ignacio Andrade, political strategist in Latin America for presidential campaigns.
Sophia Huett noted the advantages of a greater presence of women in police institutions, such as fewer human rights violations, the construction of comprehensive long-term solutions where the use of force is only a tool, as well as public policies with perspective gender, based on the real needs of women and their families.
In the presence of members of the Colombian National Police, she spoke of the need to have an “accelerator” that allows women to access leadership positions in the short and mid term, which will yield better results for citizens.
In the largest forum in Latin America on gender equality, Huett noted the effort made by Guanajuato through the “Course for Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Police Institutions” and how 32 women from eleven municipalities live a process of empowerment and expansion of their knowledge in team management, a topic that caused significant interest among the police officers present, as it is a unique exercise not only in Mexico, but also in Latin America.
“Thanks to this course, the responses and transformations that have been obtained from women are extraordinary, since they have analyzed what they want to achieve in the coming years and as the sessions go by, they talk about continuing to study, how to get promoted and to become the best profile to achieve their goals, with a plan that indicates the steps to achieve them”, said Huett Lopez.
The Secretary explained that during the training subjects such as emotional intelligence, team management, negotiation and teamwork are addressed.
“It is an accelerator for women managers, because the moment we have more women managers, we will have a different reality in our countries. When a woman enters the realm of security, the woman is the one who changes; when there are several women who participate, security is what changes and that is the goal, that we are not the ones who change our essence”, explained the Guanajuatense official.
