Dolores Hidalgo, Cradle of National Independence, is home to an immortal figure: Jose Alfredo Jimenez, who – through his music – accompanies visitors on a bohemian tour.

Born in this Magical Town in 1926, the legacy of the “King of Ranchera Music” lives on in the music today and in the Jose Alfredo Jimenez Museum, in the same house where he was born.

The museum, in addition to being a tribute to his life and work, is the starting point of the Bohemian Tour, a unique experience that transports visitors through the history, music and tradition of the singer-songwriter.

This legacy will be promoted by the Government of the People through the Secretary of Tourism and Identity, promoting participatory tourism that is deeply connected to the identity and well-being of the people of Guanajuato.

The tour begins with one of the most impressive pieces in the museum: a metamorphic painting by the painter Octavio Ocampo that, seen with more attention, reveals multiple figures that form the artist’s face, including the silhouette of Cerro del Cubilete and Dolores Hidalgo.

This work, which symbolizes both the life of the musician and the women who inspired his songs such as Paloma Galvez and Paloma, marks the beginning of a journey through the roots of ranchera music.

The museum, which has eight rooms, offers an in-depth look at Jose Alfredo Jimenez’s life, from his childhood among the jars in his father’s pharmacy, to his first steps as a butcher and soccer goalkeeper in Mexico City. It also explores his music beginnings with the group Los Rebeldes and his rise to fame thanks to his iconic song “Yo.”

After visiting the museum, the tour continues through the streets of Dolores Hidalgo to the sounds of mariachis and the songs of Jose Alfredo Jimenez.

Tourists are guided through the traditional cantinas in downtown Dolores Hidalgo, where tequila and music merge to offer an authentic experience. The cantina El Faro, with huge posters of the singer-songwriter, and El Incendio, an establishment with more than 100 years of history, are must stops where visitors enjoy the bohemian atmosphere and live music.

The tour ends at the Municipal Pantheon of Dolores Hidalgo, where the mausoleum of Jose Alfredo Jimenez is located, an architectural work designed by Javier Senosiain that symbolizes the legacy of the singer-song writer.

The mausoleum, which takes the form of a charro hat and a sarape, is decorated with more than a thousand glass bubbles, each representing one of the songs the singer wrote.

The Bohemian Tour in Dolores Hidalgo is an experience that goes beyond traditional tourism, becoming a living tribute to the musical legacy of Jose Alfredo Jimenez.
