The archaeological areas, Canada de la Virgen, in San Miguel de Allende; Plazuelas in Penjamo; Peralta, in Abasolo; El Coporo in Ocampo and Arroyo Seco in Victoria, will be open for visitors during this Holy Week vacation.
El Coporo is located in the limits of Mesoamerica. It was an important prehispanic dwelling inhabited between 500 and 900 A.D. On the hills is Conjunto Gotas and Montes, civic and administrative spaces with a residential zone. The Puerto Aire zone with its stone road suggests that it was an access for pilgrimage to the sacred parts of the place.
Arroyo Seco is considered one of the most important concentrations of cave art. It has more than 42 pictorial panels located among rocky shelters in two hills, known as La Zorra (Complex A) and La Tortuga (Complex B). This paintings were made during many centuries and they include art of hunters and collectors and the first years of the Conquest.
Plazuelas is one of the most complex prehispanic cities in the South part of Guanajuato. Its buildings were built scattered, they would communicate through long roads and walkways that go up and down through hills and a spring, “El Agua Nacida”, is the convergence point.
The place was occupied between the years 600 and 900 A.D. Its main elements are a court for the “ball game” and a series of plazas and pyramid bases called Casas Tapadas, with great beauty and architectonic work. Also admiring is the large number of petro-engravings scattered on the rocks of the place.
Peralta is a place whose greatness in the buildings puts it among the greatest ceremonial civic centers of this part of Mesoamerica, it was inhabited from 300 to 700 A.D. Among the monuments of this place a special menttion should be made to the ceremonial building called Doble Templo and Patio Hundido, as well as the Governors Place. Three other complexes have been researched: La Joyita, La Crucita and La Luz de Quintana.
The heart of Canada de la Virgen is located on the top of a hill associated to a complex of deep narrow passes and its best moment was in 640 to 900 A.D. The place includes many architectonic complexes closely linked, one of the most well known is, The Casa de los Trece Cielos, a pyramid foundation 15 meters tall, with side platforms that frame a broad sunken patio.
