As part of the 5th edition of IFE Transforming Higher Education 2026 , the Virtual University of the State of Guanajuato (UVEG) participated in Panel 6: “Transforming from above: the vision of the rectors on microcredentials”, where they reflected on their strategic role in the transformation of higher education in Latin America.

Ricardo Narvaez Martinez, stressed that microcredentials should not be understood as a fad or as a marginal complement, but as part of a new learning architecture that coexists with and strengthens the traditional university degree, by allowing for more flexible, relevant educational pathways aligned with the needs of the productive and social environment.

“The degree provides university identity; micro-credentials provide validity. It is not about replacing the university model, but about evolving it responsibly,” the rector said.

Subsequently, Rector Ricardo Narvaez participated in the talk “From design to action: the UVEG case and the transformation with microcredentials”, where he shared the institutional experience in the construction and implementation of an integral ecosystem of microcredentials, the result of a strategic decision aimed at responding, as a public university, to the accelerated changes in the educational, technological and productive environment.

Narvaez said that UVEG has actively participated in the construction of the state regulatory framework for microcredits, contributing its academic and technological vision in coordination with the Secretary of Education of Guanajuato, COEPES, and the Secretary of Economy.

“Innovation is not just about designing new credentials; it’s about making institutional decisions that allow learning to have real value, recognition, and impact for people. Moving from design to action involves structure, technology, and a clear vision of social impact,” said the rector of UVEG.

UVEG has been a pioneer in the microcredit strategy, with five courses:

  • Introduction to Microcredential Design
  • Promoters in Action: Leadership and Management for Human Development
  • Digital Transformation in the Classroom: TOMi Ecosystem
  • Competency Standard:
  • EC0076 Evaluation of Candidate Competency with a Database of Competency Standards
  • Competency Standard:
  • EC0217.01 Delivery of Human Capital Training Courses in a Face-to-Face Group Setting

To date, the university has issued 915 microcredentials, consolidating this model as an effective way of specialized training, professional retraining and continuous updating of skills.

As part of the IFE Conference 2026, the Virtual University of the State of Guanajuato was recognized as a benchmark in education during the talk “Building Future-Ready Human Capital Development Ecosystems: Reflections from Five Years of the Institute for the Future of Education” , where it was presented as an example for its microcredential ecosystem, based on learning models with multiple trajectories and a digital credential infrastructure.

“I thank Michael JL Fung, CEO of the Institute for the Future of Education, for including UVEG in the IFE Conference 2026 and allowing us to share our microcredentials model,” said Narvaez.
