Guanajuato is the first State and the only one in Mexico to implement a recognition program for sustainable practices in events that take place in Guanajuato destinations, said Juan Jose Alvarez Brunel, Secretary of Tourism of Guanajuato.
In International Tourism Fair –FITUR- 2023, in Madrid, Spain, the th staff of the World Tourism Organization –UNWTO-, with Dirk Glaesser, director of Sustainable Development of Tourism, UNWTO;to discuss the importance of implementing climate change adaptation measures with tourism service providers.
Álvarez Brunel reported that Guanajuato is the first State to launch the program in July 2022 and in which, in the same year, more than 30 events with good practices have been registered and, to date, 6 events have obtained the “Sustainable Guanajuato Distinction”, an action that was recognized by the UNWTO.
The Secretary of Tourism and Dirk Glaesser agreed to promote the strategy for the preparation of the “Climate Action Plan”, and support for the definition of tourism indicators of economic impact, as well as planning for the development of regenerative tourism.
Guanajuato was the 1st. State of Mexico to sign the “Glasgow Declaration”. With this signing, the commitment was made to globally support to reduce emissions by half by 2030 and reach Net Zero before the year 2050; and deliver a Climate Action Plan no later than September 2023 to then begin to implement it, among other actions.
Since 2010, Guanajuato, through the Ministry of Tourism, measures the economic impact in the State through the Tourism Observatory –OTEG-; and starting in 2015, it integrated the sustainable approach into measurement, taking advantage of the creation of the Tourism Sustainability Model.
This year, said the secretary of tourism, SECTUR will continue to implement and share good sustainability practices in tourism.
