“May the wealth of our state not remain only in the Sierra de Santa Rosa, but may all Guanajuato residents feel proud of that history that makes us be and feel, and that today marks the future, hand in hand with a glorious past, of our people”, said Governor of Guanajuato, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo.

The Governor was at the 4th Ordinary Session of the Guanajuato City Council, where she was a guest of honor and where she was asked that the “Festival of the Tejocotero Indians of the Sierra de Guanajuato” be recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the State Capital.

“I am here to express my full support for the declaration of intangible cultural heritage”, said Libia.

“We recognize the historical value of this tradition and we want it to continue for our sons and daughters. Today I promise that, from the State Government and with the help of the Municipality, we will make this tradition known in every corner of Guanajuato,” said the Governor.

The ‘Celebration of the Capture of the Alhondiga de Granaditas in the Mineral de Santa Rosa de Lima, the guerrillas of the Tejocotero Indians in the Sierra de Guanajuato’, takes place in October of each year where a confrontation between Indians and Spaniards is staged to take the Alhondiga de Granaditas.

This tradition dates back to 1864 when Maximilian of Habsburg visited Guanajuato and on his way to the town of Dolores, inhabitants of Santa Rosa de Lima represented the Taking of the Alhondiga for the first time.

The Governor said that the wealth of the people of Guanajuato is in its buildings and traditions; these are treasures that must endure and remain in force so that they remain in memory, recalling the moments of struggle that made Guanajuato great.

Unity gives strength to the people, the Governor stressed, and urged those present to work together and make Guanajuato a strong and worthy state to be inherited by the new generations.

Members of the City Council delivered 103 concession titles to merchants from the Hidalgo, Gavira, Embajadoras and former railway station markets so that they have legal certainty regarding the operation of the premises and thus, secure their assets.
