The Cervantino 50 joins the celebration of 100 years of Mexican muralism with exhibitions in Guanajuato venues

The International Cervantino Festival (FIC), which in this edition will take place from October 12 to the 30, 2022, announces the first part of its 50th anniversary program, with artistic from Guanajuato and the main stage of this celebration, the square at the Alhondiga de Granaditas.
This year the festival, which has Korea as its guest country and Mexico City as its guest State, will present 115 stage shows.
There will be disciplines like:
- Theater, dance, music, opera and 50 multidisciplinary and visual arts activities
This programming will be held in person to receive the audience of the Mexican Republic and the world.
The festival of the spirit will have the participation of 34 countries:
- Germany, Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Denmark, Spain, United States of America, France, Greece, Hungary, India, Iran, Israel, Italy , Japan, Mexico, Mozambique, Nigeria, The Netherlands, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, United Kingdom, Republic of Korea, Serbia, Taiwan, Venezuela, Russia and Ukraine
All are examples of the artistic and cultural diversity of the world, showing that in Mexico and the FIC, artists of any nationality and of any origin are welcome, since culture and art are universal.
During the presentation in Guanajuato, the Secretary of Culture of the Government of Mexico, Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, said that “This year, we are celebrating the reunion, this is the party of hope, of cultural rights, this is the party where we all meet, there is no culture that is not welcome in Mexico, all cultures from all countries are welcome to this festival. Culture unites us, culture is going to set the example of how we can together dream of a different future”.
Governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo, said: “In Guanajuato we are sure that culture is a tool for social change, and in these 50 years the FIC has contributed to improving the quality of life of the Guanajuato residents promoting tourism and positioning Guanajuato in the eyes of the world”.
“My commitment as Governor is to continue promoting the spirit of Cervantes, promote art and culture, and consolidate Guanajuato as the greatness of Mexico”, said Rodriguez Vallejo.
The general dean of the University of Guanajuato, Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino, recalled that the Cervantino Entremeses, staged by the University Theater, “are the precedent of this festival, now an icon and cultural reference in the world. The FIC has overcome economic crises, earthquakes and a pandemic, and has demonstrated the power of art and culture, able to transcend time, distance and adversity”.
Guerrero Agripino announced the creation of the Cervantino Lecture, which will include research, links and artistic activities among its lines. The foregoing, within the framework of an effort to preserve the roots of the Cervantino Festival and, at the same time, promote its renewal.
The general director of the Cervantino International Festival, Mariana Aymerich Ordoñez said that “When we think of Guanajuato, the Alhondiga is on everyone’s mind. A space of national memory that today is also seen as the most beloved stage by Guanajuato residents and the stage that will receive prestigious artists such as: Joan Manuel Serrat, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra led by the great musician Winton Marsalis; Cafe Tacvba with the Symphony Orchestra of the University of Guanajuato (OSUG), Lila Downs, Francisca Valenzuela, Sean Kuti, Rosario Flores, Pate de Fua and from the guest of honor country, we will have the presence of the group Coreyah and the performance of the K-pop group: KARD”, informed Aymerich.
This year’s programming was built with the nostalgic memory of the 50th anniversary, but also as a pause for reflection on the future of the Festival.
“Peace, sustainability, inclusion, collective rights, recognition of diversity, decentralization and the defense of cultural heritage are the issues and values that drive us”, said Aymerich.
The president of the Korea International Cultural Exchange Foundation on behalf of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sports, Mr. Jung Kilhwa, said: “This year’s program is consistent with the anniversary that we celebrate. It recognizes the trajectory and memory of the festival, it is frank, diverse and innovative. It leaves no one behind. In times of war, culture is the bridge and the port of arrival. Alejandra Frausto’s instruction was precise: for the Cervantino International Festival, which is the only federal festival, there is no small country and all the cultural expressions of the world and the country fit here because we understand culture as a human right”.
The Secretary of Culture of the capital, Claudia Curiel de Icaza said that the opening and closing of the festival will be by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Mexico City and Caifanes.
In this edition, the festival will feature activities that go beyond the stage, such as the publication of a book commemorating the FIC’s 50th anniversary, an exhibition at the Chapultepec Gates Open Gallery and the launch of a National Lottery ticket.
Within the commemoration activities, the radio series “Your voice counts”, the audiovisual capsules “50 de Cervantes”, the First Cervantes International Seminar in America “Los Quixotes de las Lenguas”, Cervantina Lecture, in addition to the reorganization and opening of the Cervantino collection.
This fiftieth anniversary is combined with the commemoration of 100 years of Mexican muralism, for which events alluding to this artistic movement are being prepared; the Guanajuato project is light and an interactive show by La Fura dels Baus, created especially for the FIC.
The opening of the festival will be on October 12 at the Alhondiga de Granaditas, with the presentation of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Mexico City and the voices of the Mexican Maria Katzarava and the Korean soprano Hera Hyesang Park; in an artistic fusion of Mexico City with Korea.
Contemporary Korean culture will be reflected with the K-pop group KARD on October 13, followed by the German band Roosevelt on Friday the 14th, Cafe Tacvba with OSUG on the 15th, and on October 16 the band Mademoiselle, from Algeria and France.
The second week will begin on Monday 17 with the presentation of the State Music Band and Musical Winds directed by Adalberto Tovar Gomez and Francisco J. Balboa Luna, who joins the celebration of half a century of Cervantino tradition. The Amalia Hernandez Folkloric Ballet of Mexico will come to this stage to celebrate its 70th anniversary on October 18.
As part of the commemoration of the 60 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Korea, the invited country and the National Center for Intangible Heritage, will bring to Mexico K-Intangible Heritage on October 19, a fragment of the K Festival of Intangible Heritage that shares traditional Korean music, dance and theater in one show.
Among other artists invited to the Alhondiga de Granaditas plaza are Lila Downs on the 20th, Seun Kuti on the 21st of October, Coreyah on the 22nd and Joan Manuel Serrat presenting his tour The vice of singing 1965-2022 on Sunday 23 saying goodbye to the stage after more than half a century of experience.
To start the last week of FIC 50 activities, the Folkloric Ballet of the University of Guanajuato will appear on Monday, October 24; later, on the 25th, the Chilean Francisca Valenzuela, Goran Bregovic and his Wedding and Funeral Band, from Serbia on October 26. In the jazz offer, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will be present on Thursday 27; on the 28th, Rosario Flores arrives from Spain, and Paté de Fuá celebrates its 15th anniversary on Saturday, October 29.
The Cervantino Festival will close with the presentation of the rock band Caifanes, with a repertoire of rock anthems in Spanish from the last 35 years.
Guanajuato has a wide cultural offer that year after year enriches the streets and Cervantino scenarios.
This year the University of Guanajuato will have the participation of its Symphony Orchestra celebrating its 70th anniversary and will have several presentations, among them the interpretation of Gustav Mahler ‘s Symphony of a Thousand , and a piece with Enrique Diemecke as guest conductor; as well as events of the University Theater, the Rondalla Senorial, the Rondalla Santa Fe and the Estudiantina of the Universidad de Guanajuato.
Other shows to be presented with Guanajuatense talent are: Sindy Gutierrez and Paax K’aay String Quartet, I sing a story to you: The little nightingale, Mushamukas Double Bass Ensemble, Capella Guanajuatensis Baroque Music Ensemble, Lola’s Experimental Dance Company Lince, the Silvestre Revueltas Youth Symphony Orchestra, Rodolfo Ponce Montero, Luis Herman Miranda; Bach, dance project; Theater of dreams; and the sound installation directed by Roberto Morales Manzanares.
For the University of Guanajuato it is important to highlight the roots of the festival, through the Cervantine Entremeses by the University Theater group of this house of studies.
The FIC is also an open space for visual arts and the exhibition of works within the venues that are part of the history of the festival and of Guanajuato.
This year 27 visual arts exhibitions will be inaugurated in collaboration with the State Institute of Culture, located within the disciplines of:
- Painting, photography, installation, pottery, engraving and multidisciplinary

The public squares of Guanajuato are an essential part of the culture and the FIC through the integration of the public, so this year these spaces will be used with the presence of the Comedy Car of the UNAM Theater, Paolo Nani, the Rondalla Santa Fe of the University of Guanajuato, the Rondalla Senorial of the University of Guanajuato, the Danzonera Pegaso of the Secretary of Citizen Security of Mexico City, 100 years of Mexican muralism and Guanajuato is Light, a light projection that celebrates the 50 years of Cervantino.
The film projections present proposals from the guests of honor, Mexico City and Korea. CDMX presents 15 films at the Old Patio of the Hospice of the Holy Trinity, the University of Guanajuato, among which are:
- Xochimilco , Alicia beyond the abyss , Without so many Panchos and Ciudad Merced .
By Korea, 26 film proposals will be screened in collaboration with the Korean Cultural Center in Mexico of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, such as All Roads Lead Home , Sopyonje , The Host and Arirang.
About the master classes, they will be conducted by the conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Gustavo Dudamel and Wynton Marsalis. Both will have an intimate meeting where the directors will engage in dialogue and feedback on music and the artistic community.
For this edition of the FIC, the Colegio de San Ildefonso prepared a series of conferences related to the 100 years of muralism, among which are:
- David Alfaro Siqueiros; The spirit of the West or the elements, Jose Clemente Orozco. Cortes and La Malinche and others, with the participation of Irene Herner and Jonatan Chavez; Fermin Revueltas. Allegory to the Virgin of Guadalupe and Ramon Alva de la Canal, with Alberto Híjar and Elissa Rashkin, and Between the social revolution and feminism: the artistic strategies of “modern” women , with Christina Hijar Gonzalez.
As for literary presentations:
- Here was Caduro , a compilation of the work of the painter and muralist Rafael Caduro; Enrique Arturo Diemecke. Biography with music by Mahler , a book by Jose Angel Leyva, and La Ciudad de los Poemas: Poetic Sampler from Mexico City , by author Claudia Kerink.
As part of Social FIC, this year, the Ruelas Project turns eight years old and will conclude its first cycle of community theater workshops, for which the work tables will be held: Memories of the Ruelas Project, with the participation of stage directors Juliana Faesler, Raquel Araujo and Sara Pinedo. These will be developed with the aim of generating spaces for coexistence through the arts.
Likewise, there will be a theatrical performance by the community of CEFERESO No. 12, in addition to the activities of Cervantino for all and Beyond Guanajuato.
