The Governor of Guanajuato visited the Cerro del Cubilete where maintenance work on the sculpture of the National Votive Shrine of Christ the King of Peace was inaugurated.
Since its last intervention 11 years ago, made before the visit of Pope Benedict XVI, this year, the monument to Christ the King was once again intervened to give it comprehensive maintenance and return it to its original splendor.
The Governor said he was convinced that religion and Government are very different things, but a nation without God is not a nation, because the faith of people is very important and Guanajuato is a state of faith.
“I feel very proud to witness this remodeling of one of the most important symbols of faith in the country and I thank the Mariscal family and the Archdiocese of Leon for what they have done,” said Rodriguez Vallejo.
For the maintenance of the monument built in 1944, a committee was formed in which several specialists participated; samples were applied with chemical engineering to clean it properly and its structure was revised.
The cast bronze monument, 22 meters high and weighing more than 80 tons, has been thoroughly cleaned, exposing clean natural bronze, and encapsulating it with aeronautical chemical engineering technology designed products to ensure that the metal will last for many years.
Subsequently, a cold patina was designed to give it the original tone that the monument has always had.
46 people participated in these task, including specialists and masons; the works had a cost close to 5 million pesos and were a private contribution and from the Archdiocese of Leon.
The Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Leon, Alfonso Cortes Contreras, was present at this inauguration, he said that this monument “interprets us, our Nation and our State; we are facing something that transcends and that is the culture of people”.
