Through the Fruit Program of the Ministry of Agro-Food and Rural Development, more than 168,000 lemon plants have been planted in orchards in Guanajuato, promoting this profitable activity for Guanajuato producers.
Paulo Banuelos Rosales, Secretary of Agro-Food and Rural Development of Guanajuato, reported that the Fruit Program began in 2013, consisting of supporting production units with 70% of the cost of the plant to establish fruit orchards of up to three hectares by year; lemon cultivation was incorporated into this program in 2015.
“Lemon has been one of the most successful crops that we have promoted because, as you know, it is part of the diet of all Mexicans and it is in high demand, so it is also very profitable for producers. Let’s remember that Mexico is the second largest lemon producer in the world,” said the Secretary.
Through the sum of efforts and economic resources with the production units, municipalities and producer organizations, the SDAyR has managed to support 409 production units, to establish 398 hectares of Persian and Mexican lemon in a smaller proportion, with support for the purchase and planting of 168 thousand 656 lemon plants.
In the period from 2015 to 2022, the investment exceeds $5 million pesos by the SDAyR; little more than $1 million contributed by the municipalities and $2 million 100 thousand pesos from the benefited production units, for a total investment of $8 million 100 thousand pesos.
Banuelos explained that in order to favor the concentration of a compact area that facilitates marketing, management and phytosanitary control, the southwestern region of the state of Guanajuato has been favored, where the municipalities stand out for the largest area, these municipalities are:
- Penjamo, Abasolo, Huanimaro, Cueramaro, Valle de Santiago, Yuriria and Silao
Banuelos said that the Fruit Program has been a great alternative for Guanajuato producers, since in addition to financial support to buy plants, payment for soil fertility analysis is included, as well as technical assistance and training support for the benefited production units.
