Guanajuato joined the Chinese New Year celebration, with a festive day this Saturday 11th and included gastronomy, martial arts, traditional Chinese dances and a parade with the participants of the costume contest.
The rabbit sign governs the year that just started in the traditional Chinese calendar:
- It is a symbol of skill, ingenuity and prosperity that inspired the participants of the costume contest organized by the State Institute of Culture and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Mexico
There were 19 participants in the individual category and five teams in the collective showed their creativity and skill to develop and present rabbit costumes that ingeniously integrated symbolic elements of China and Mexico.
In the individual category, the contest distributed its prizes to Celeste Martinez, first place; Andrea Yebra and Luis Mauricio Vazquez.
In the collective category, the winner was the representative of the General Bicentenario de la Independencia Secondary School, from San Miguel de Allende, with the teams from the Ignacio Montes de Oca Institute and CANIRAC Guanajuato in second and third place positions.
Celeste Martinez, from Leon, won first place with the costume of a warrior rabbit, especially striking due to her wings and armor in red and gold colors, in which she invested two weeks of work.
“My costume is called Guerrera Giada, which means jade in Italian. My armor and wings are made from recycled cardboard and the colors red and gold are associated with the Chinese holiday. I am very excited to have won first place. I participated last year and I couldn’t win but I wanted to win”, Celeste commented.
“We created the costume from the plastic arts workshop with the traditional cardboard technique. It was a collaboration between all the students. With the experience of last year, I knew that if we did a good job, we would get a good result”, said the plastic arts teacher, the artist Iliana Romero from the Bicentenario de la Independencia Secondary School, from San Miguel de Allende.
The jury of the contest included: Flor Ni, first secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Mexico; Cecilia Galindo Ayala, queen of the city of Guanajuato; Arantxa Espinosa Rosales, representative of the Guanajuato Hotel and Motel Association and officials from the State Institute of Culture.
Flor Ni, representative of the Chinese Embassy in Mexico, was pleased with the event. “This second edition is very impressive to me because they had more contestants and all the costumes are very beautiful and impressive. This contest began in Mexico City since 2017 and we want it to also be a cultural reference for Guanajuato to further link the two cultures.”
