The Secretary of Culture of the People’s Government and the City Council of Purisima del Rincon held the Judean Masks Exhibition Contes at the “La Casona” Cultural and Exhibition Center in that municipality.

The contest is intended to preserve the more than 100-year-old tradition of mask-making for La Judea, a popular theater performance pioneered by the painter Hermenegildo Bustos, which is held during Holy Week.

The tradition began in 1873 with the master painter, who since then collaborated in the creation of wooden masks with colorin, a material native to the area, which depict the faces of “Jews,” soldiers, apostles, musicians, and other figures.

During this festival, people take to the streets to witness the traditional Stations of the Cross and appreciate the work of artisans who make these masks, which are a sarcastic representation that include biblical characters, who seek to apprehend and kill Jesus using Judas Iscariot, the emblematic traitor of the greatest Catholic figure.

This year, thanks to a major effort by the People’s Government, this event returns with a prize fund of $30,000 pesos divided into six prizes of $5,000 pesos each.
