Municipalities are asked to work on fire prevention

Authorities identify susceptible areas with lower, medium, and higher fire risk that will be under surveillance throughout Guanajuato

More than 3,000 people and 500 vehicles make up the force, which includes state, federal, and municipal authorities

The Secretary of Security and Peace, through the State Coordination of Civil Protection, called on the 46 municipalities of Guanajuato to redouble efforts in the face of the increase in fires during the winter season. 

The agency has the “Special Civil Protection Program for the Attention to Chemical-Technological Phenomena Originating in the 2026 Season of Prevention, Combat, Control and Extinction of Forest and Grassland Fires” in which federal and municipal authorities also participate in a coordinated manner. 

According to the National Forest Fire Commission, the background of the incidence in Guanajuato is that from January to December 10, 294 forest and grassland fires were identified in 31 municipalities, affecting 13,000 hectares.

The municipalities with the most cases are:

• Penjamo, Valle de Santiago, Guanajuato, Silao, Dolores Hidalgo and Jerecuaro

The Secretary of Security asked municipalities to report when they require the immediate response of support brigades.

The force is formed in coordination with federal authorities and participating are:

• The National Guard, the Secretary of National Defense (SEDENA), the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), the Secretary of Water and Environment (SAMA), the Secretary of Agriculture, the Environmental and Territorial Planning Attorney, municipal fire departments and brigades
• With a total of 3,737 people, 683 vehicles and a helicopter. 

The Secretary of Security and Peace invites citizens to call the emergency number 911 in case of any emergency or fire identified.
