The Government of Guanajuato offers help and care in a transversal manner to migrants in transit who are stranded in Irapuato.
Susana Guerra Vallejo, head of the Migrant Secretary and International Affairs –SMEI-, reported that her agency permanently maintains communication with associations, shelters and municipalities from Celaya, Irapuato and Leon to contribute to their efforts and needs.
“The current problem is due to the mobility crisis of migration in transit presented in Mexico, which has generated emerging focuses of attention in different states. In Guanajuato particularly, this has been concentrated in Irapuato, precisely because of the transit of the train”, said Guerra Vallejo.
Guerra said that to address this situation, part of the initial humanitarian actions that the State Government carries out are part of the protocol for caring for groups of people who come from other parts and cross through our territory.
So far they have been provided:
- Support with food
- Attention with efforts on health issues for migrants
- Delivery of personal cleaning kits
Guerra Vallejo said that this increase in the number of migrants in transit is due to two primary factors:
- First, the overpopulation presented in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas and limitation of personnel of the National Institute of Migration and the Mexican Commission for Aid to Refugees, COMAR to serve all people seeking refuge and/or traditional migrants who request their temporary visa.
- Second, the decision of FERROMEX to suspend the operation of its trains, has caused a halt in the mobility of migrants, in the case of Guanajuato, the concentration is registered in the city of Irapuato
The head of the SMEI reported that by the weekend, there were approximately 800 people on the 21st century bridge and approximately 1,200 more dispersed in different parts of that city, which represents some 2,000 stranded migrants.
“Of this population, approximately 100 minors have been detected, all accompanied by adults, and more than 50 pregnant women”, said Guerra Vallejo.
Guerra added that according to reports of Irapuatense authorities, everything seems to indicate that FERROMEX could reactivate its services in the next few hours. If this were the case, mobility would continue more fluidly and containment could be provided to the population that regularly passes through that point.
To prevent any scenario, these other actions are being done:
- The SMEI is in coordination with the municipal authorities to continue providing care to this social group in fundamental needs
- The Ministry of Health through health jurisdiction number 6 of Irapuato provides medical care in coordination with the municipality’s health directorate, serving in two shifts -morning and afternoon-
- A trailer of mobile toilets is managed so that they can be installed as soon as possible in the bridge area and thus avoid red flags in health
- DIF has supported with food, as well as the Food Bank that provides to the “Friends of the Train” association
Susana Guerra Vallejo said in conclusion that in addition to the above, meetings are held with personnel from the municipality of Irapuato linked to topics of:
- Education, Economic and Social Development, Public Security
Contact is also maintained with various local companies to manage support in assistance.
