Following up on the actions carried out by the State Government through the Secretary of Human Rights under the instructions of Governor Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, personnel from the Liaison Office in Los Angeles toured two of the evacuation centers set up to assist people affected by the fires that damaged and destroyed more than 9,000 homes in California, United States.

At the Pasadena Convention Center, where some of the victims from the city of Altadena have gone and where a very large Latino population lives, two families from Guanajuato were found, originally from the municipalities of San Jose Iturbide and Uriangato.

This is Teresa Campuzano and her three children, originally from San Jose Iturbide and who have been living in the United States for 18 years. This family lost all the material possessions as a result of the fires. “Now we are going to try to survive, to start over, the most difficult now is to find an income because in the first place there are not many options, it is very expensive and for those of us who do not have documents sometimes it is not so easy,” said Teresa.

Also a couple from the municipality of Uriangato was located, made up of Miguel Angel Montano and his wife Sonia. This family lost their house on the slopes of the hill in Altadena, where they had lived for more than 30 years. “Although the most valuable thing is life, it hurts us to have lost the effort of so many years,” said Miguel Angel.

As part of the State Government’s support for these affected families, staff from the Liaison Office in Los Angeles coordinate actions with Guanajuato organizations in the United States to provide them with help and donations. Also the Secretary of Human Rights is analyzing the possibility of offering economic or in-kind support to these people.
