Guanajuato’s talent shines on the national stage. Ruben, a prisoner at the Center for Prevention and Social Reintegration (Ceprereso) in Valle de Santiago, won first place in the 29th David Alfaro Siqueiros National Drawing Contest, a competition organized by the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) and the federal Secretary of Culture, through the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL).
The competition brought together 486 participants from prisons across Mexico, who expressed their sensitivity and creativity in works that were evaluated by art specialists based on criteria of originality, technique, and aesthetic proposal. Guanajuato stood out with the work “My Creative Mind,” which won over the jury for its expressive power and symbolic depth.
Ruben shared his surprise upon receiving the news. “I just received the surprise of winning the national competition. I’m shocked, and the first thing that comes to mind is to thank. I want to thank the director general, the Secretary of Security, and our Governor, because everything works together for our reintegration. If I hadn’t had their support, I wouldn’t have achieved this dream,” said Ruben.
The process that led him to this point was also an exercise in support and trust. Ruben recalled how he received encouragement every day within the center: “I’ve always said that success is never achieved alone. It takes someone’s help. And that someone was the technical department, who motivated me every day, told me I had the capabilities and not to pressure myself. Here’s the result: first place nationally.”
