Guanajuato has once again placed Mexico among the world’s wine elite, winning 11 medals at the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), the most prestigious international wine competition, along with the Brussels World Competition.

Among the medals stands out the gold medal awarded to Vinicola San Miguel de Allende’s 2019 Blend Reserva wine, representing Mexico’s second consecutive gold medal in this event.
The rest of the Guanajuato medal count includes five silver and five bronze medals, won by labels from Vinicola Tres Raices, Vinicola San Miguel de Allende, and Bodega Los Remedios.

The wines from Valle de la Independencia were blind-evaluated by a panel of 248 experts, including 22 Master Sommeliers and 72 Masters of Wine.
Wines from 57 countries participated in this 22nd edition of the DWWA. Fifty “Best in Show” medals were awarded, along with 137 Platinum medals and 732 Gold medals, representing an 81.5% increase in the total number of medals compared to last year, reflecting a notable improvement in the overall quality of the wines.

Ramon Velez Gutierrez, president of the Guanajuato Grape and Wine Association, noted the steady growth of the sector in the State and the direct support to the countryside by having a variety of vineyards and wines, as the communities are the ones that benefit from this recognition, generating visits to the State and offering wine-related experiences that engage visitors.
“Today, we have nearly 600 hectares planted with vines, 90% of which are already in production. We grow around 2,000 tons of Guanajuatense grapes, which can be used to make 1.6 million bottles, of which 1.2 million are on the market. We are in the best consumer centers in the country,” noted Velez Gutierrez, as he thanked the People’s Government for its support through the Secretary of Tourism and Identity.

Velez Gutierrez also highlighted the unique conditions of the Guanajuatense territory, where “expressive and elegant wines are produced at an altitude of 2,000 meters. That altitude is sought after by the world’s leading wineries, and here we have it. We have done a great job over these 15 years, always with the support of SECTURI,” said the association’s president.
Guanajuato is consolidating its position as the fourth largest wine producer in Mexico, with a young but rapidly expanding industry that combines the identity of the Valley of the Independence with innovation, tradition, and quality in every bottle.
