Guanajuato Capital will be dressed in gala, celebration and tradition with the sixth edition of the “Day of the Dead Festival”, an event that year after year is consolidated by offering cultural and artistic experiences full of meaning and history.

Maria Guadalupe Robles de Leon, Secretary of Tourism and Identity, and Samantha Smith Gutierrez, Mayor of Guanajuato City, gave the details of this festival that will take place from October 31 to November 3 and has Aguascalientes and Guatemala as special guests.

From SECTURI, we will work to maintain the traditions, culture and identity of “Guanajuato, a destination that has established itself as a cultural treasure that reflects the historical and artistic treasures of Mexico. The city vibrates with cultural expressions that are a living reflection of a rich history, ancestral traditions and identity that is felt in every corner. Its people, warm and proud of their roots, keep alive the customs that are passed down from generation to generation,” said Guadalupe Robles.

For four days, the streets and alleys of the World Heritage City will be filled with culture, tradition, history and art. Guanajuato City will become an unmissable destination for those seeking experiences full of life, meaning and identity.

In this edition, said Robles, an economic spending of 195 million pesos is expected and the arrival of more than 145 thousand visitors, who will be able to enjoy a program with activities such as:

  • The Tapestry of the Death
  • Procession of the Angelitos that take place in the main streets of the city
  • Exhibition of giant skulls and catrinas up to six meters high
  • The offering of the dead that will be dedicated to the Mexican painters Diego Rivera, (born in Guanajuato) and Frida Kahlo, icons of Mexican art
  • Also the Parade of Catrinas and Calaveras
  • The Tunnel of Tradition that will take place in the underground streets of Guanajuato

The Tunnel of Tradition will offer a varied gastronomic and artisanal variety with more than 200 exhibitors along a kilometer in order to create a space where the culture and traditions of the Day of the Dead come to life.

The Mayor of Guanajuato, Samantha Smith, explained that Aguascalientes will pay tribute to Jose Guadalupe Posadas, creator of the Catrina; while Guatemala will have a pavilion that will include a photographic exhibition of the giant kites, a tradition with which Guatemalan families remember their deceased by raising them to the sky.
