The diversity of artisan expressions from Guanajuato captivated the Iberian public during the exhibition “Great Masters of Popular Art from Guanajuato”, presented as part of Guanajuato Week at the Casa de Mexico Foundation in Spain.
The exhibition, prepared by the State Institute of Culture, included more than 60 pieces by 19 popular Guanajuatense artists, made in different techniques that included pottery (majolica, high-temperature ceramics, glazed clay), wood carving, basketry, waxsculpture, jewelry and lapidaria, coming from different points of Guanajuato.
The compact, but substantial, Guanajuato artisan tour set up at the Madrid headquarters of Casa de Mexico in Spain, led visitors to appreciate expressions of pre-Hispanic heritage, such as the burnished clay of San Felipe; basketry from the Otomi region of Tierra Blanca and the molcajetes carved in volcanic stone from Comonfort; as well as legacies that arrived in Mexico with the Spaniards, such as majolica or glazed ceramics and manifestations that increased with miscegenation, such as the popular toy, the alfenique, badrboard or waxsculpture.
Adriana Camarena de Obeso, director of the State Institute of Culture, said on the occasion: “Popular art and the work of Guanajuato master craftsmen are a reflection of the pride of identity that arises from their cultural roots, inherited by the native peoples of the State and Country, as well as the encounters and legacies of other cultures, such as the Spanish and Oriental”.
“The products of these convergences become the continuous parade of traditionalism that is an innate referent of the ritual, uses and customs of its inhabitants”, said Camarena.
The exhibition, which ended on Saturday 20th, included works by highly significant artists from Guanajuato, such as the majolica master Gorky Gonzalez and the ceramicist Javier Servin.
As parallel activities to the exhibition, there were a total of eight guided tours and a candle making workshop with the master Ramon Ramirez from Salamanca, in which the participants were able to create their own decorative candles.
