“The State of Guanajuato works to promote sustainable development and face climate change”, said the Governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo, as he led the opening ceremony of the 4th edition of Mexico Carbon Forum 2024.
“This is a space for stakeholders from different sectors to learn and discuss the trends and initiatives associated with carbon pricing instruments and, above all, the most efficient routes for decarbonization. With this Mexico Carbon Forum, we seek to accelerate sustainable development in our country and thereby promote the reduction of emissions from large companies, strengthening their competitiveness and preparing them to face climate change,” said the Governor in his inaugural message.
In the 4th edition of the Mexico Carbon Forum GTO 2024, a space is created to bring together interest groups that will be able to identify the high potential for developing projects that generate carbon credits and reduce emissions in the most efficient way.
This event contributes to promoting the supply and demand of carbon pricing instruments in various sectors of Mexico and Latin America and specifically the participants in the emissions tax in the State of Guanajuato.
The 4th edition is held as the implementation of the subnational carbon tax is enforced, setting the tone for discussion sessions on new carbon price implementation mechanisms, use of offsets through emissions reduction projects and lessons learned in the sector.
This forum addresses relevant topics on the evolution of the new pre-compliance market, emerging markets, biodiversity credits, regulated markets, emissions trading systems -ETS-, international markets such as CORSIA and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
The climate policy in Guanajuato is strengthened in the State Development Plan PED 2040 as well as in the Government Program 2018-2024 with specific goals, objectives, strategies and lines of action regarding attention to Climate Change.
Last June 7, the reform to the Climate Change Law for the State of Guanajuato and its Municipalities was published, which will allow for a legal framework that reflects the need to accelerate mitigation and adaptation by reducing the risks related to climate change in addition to guaranteeing the human right to a healthy environment.
This law contains planning instruments for the State climate change policy that includes:
- State Program
- Biodiversity Strategy
- Diversification and Energy Efficiency Program
- Municipal Climate Action programs
It also contains climate policy instruments like:
- Climatological Diagnosis
- Vulnerability Outlook
- Sectorial decarbonization routes
- Carbon Budget
- Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Compounds
- State Energy Balance
- State Energy Supply and Demand Outlook
- State Potential Renewable Energies
- Environmental Information Platform
The Forum takes place on August 14 and 15 at the Poliforum in the city of Leon.
