The Government of the People enabled 330 sites of the Free Internet for the People program in rural areas and 1,120 in urban areas of the industrial corridor

Guanajuato/Gto News

As part of the People’s Government’s commitment to digitally connect Guanajuatense families, the Secretary of Public Works (SOP) enabled sites with free internet access in 22 municipalities of Guanajuato, through the Free Internet for the People program.

The first phase:

  • 1,450 internet connection sites were enabled
  • 1,120 via fiber optics located in the industrial corridor (Celaya, Guanajuato, Irapuato, Leon, Salamanca, and Silao)
  • 330 using microwave technology, located in rural areas and marginalized communities

These points are strategically distributed in locations such as:

  • Schools, hospitals, public squares, community centers, sports facilities, and government offices, providing the greatest social reach

“Guaranteeing digital connectivity is part of our work at the SOP. Our Governor, Libia Dennise, has asked us to work on reducing the digital divide, which includes inequality in access to the internet, technological tools, and information,” said Juan Pablo Perez Beltran, head of the Secretary of Public Works.

The State Official added that the program’s objective is to pave the way for social inclusion and promote comprehensive development so that all people have equal opportunities. Therefore, the People’s Government is investing 543 million pesos in these initiatives.

Francisco Jose de Anda Orellana, Undersecretary of Connectivity and Mobility at the SOP, emphasized that this program represents a cross-cutting tool for development. “Connectivity allows us to empower rights and connect with people, even digitally,” he said.

Free Internet for the People will allow children and young people to access educational content; doctors to provide more efficient service; keep families connected; and entrepreneurs to take advantage of digital tools to grow their businesses.

This program is a tool for social inclusion, with which the People’s Government reaffirms its continued work as an enabler of rights and opportunities.
