“The Cultural diversity unites us as Mexicans, the country lives in times that require unity, not division”, said the Governor Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo, as he presented the monumental carpet made by artists from Uriangato in the Zocalo in Mexico City.
This work of ephemereal art by guanajuatenses is more than 3 thousand square meters, and it will be in exposition in the Square of the Constitution (Zocalo) of Mexico City from February 7th to the 12th, it was made by more than 200 guanajuatenses and members of the Scouts Association of Mexico A.C. who worked in the elaboration of the work with materials like cocoa, plants, seeds, sand, tinted sawdust and other materials.
Culture, roots and traditions
Designer Cristina Pineda, decided to add this carpet to the ideology of Xico “the generation of a positive change through art and culture”; it is a work of art that tells a story about love to Mexico, to our roots and traditions, through the symbolism and voice of “Xico” a xoloitzcuintle dog that alludes to the origin of the word “Mexico” and presents the roots of the culture becoming a symbol of national identity for the actual and future generations.
In Uriangato for more than half a century there is a tradition of making carpets and rugs of sawdust and flowers; today this activity has a social meaning that is very important in this municipality of Guanajuato, since through art, the family, adolescents and children’s values can be strengthened, by remembering their roots and our identity, besides de tourist promotion it represents for Guanajuato.
Protected art
In order to protect the traditions of Guanajuato, last January the State Governor Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo, through a decree made a “Declaration of the rugs and carpets of Uriangato and The Octava of Saint Michael Archangel, as Cultural Intangible Patrimony of the State of Guanajuato”, as an expression of traditional and popular culture.
“This presentation (in Mexico City) will allow us to unite more Guanajuato and Mexico City and have a closer union among Mexican brothers, that is the ultimate message of this carpet and it is a sample of the heart of Guanajuatenses through this ephemeral art”, said the Governor.
Guanajuato is a great State, full of culture and it is full of first class artists, said the Governor. Many things are said about Guanajuato and we should show the best of our State in history and culture, he said.
