Rangers of the Protected Natural Area –ANP- Sierra de los Agustinos in Acambaro were accepted for the first time as provisional members of the International Ranger Federation -IRF- thanks to the actions they do to protect, conserve and restore this important Protected Natural Area.

Only two groups of Rangers in Mexico belong to this association, as reported by the head of the Ministry of Environment and Territorial Planning -SMAOT- Maria Isabel Ortiz Mantilla, as part of the International Ranger Day.

The Secretary recognized the work done by the 60 rangers of Guanajuato for the protection of each of the ANPs they work on; fundamental work for the preservation of biodiversity in Guanajuato.

The recognition of the International Ranger Federation is proof – said Ortiz- of the commitment of the Government of Guanajuato to promote their training among environmental guardians, through the training and equipment they receive, actions that allow them to have the necessary tools to perform their work for the protection of natural resources.

The rangers of the ANP Sierra de los Agustinos will have the opportunity to exchange experiences and knowledge through the IRF Brotherhood Program, connect with partner organizations such as The Thin Green Line Foundation –TTGLF- and the International Union for Conservation of Nature – World Commission on Protected Areas -IUCN-WCPA-, nominate colleagues for FIG/TGLF Awards, trainings, attend World Ranger Congress, participate in global World Ranger Day celebrations.

The IRF recognized the actions carried out by the rangers in the Sierra de los Agustinos like:

  • Biological monitoring, soil and water conservation works, (sanitary and corrective pruning, reforestation, live barriers and jars for soil retention, placement of signage, collection of polluting waste, etc. ), environmental education, monitoring and prevention of environmental crimes, prevention and combat of forest fires and support to the ejidos, in the control of visitors

The forest rangers are inhabitants of the communities near the ANPs, fully dedicated to the protection and conservation of their natural resources, with the necessary skills and equipment, assigned to the municipal governments in coordination with the SMAOT.

We currently have 60 registered rangers in 22 municipalities in 18 ANPs in:

  • Acambaro, Comonfort, Cortazar, Cueramaro, Guanajuato, Irapuato, Jerecuaro, Juventino Rosas, Leon, Manuel Doblado, Moroleon, Penjamo, Purisima de Rincon, Salamanca, San Diego de la Union, San Felipe, San Francisco del Rincon, San Jose Iturbide, Tierra Blanca, Valle de Santiago and Yuriria

The ANPs that have rangers are:

  • Cerro de Arandas, Cerro de los Amoles, Cerro del Palenque, Cerros El Culiacan and La Gavia, Cuenca Alta del Rio Temascatio, Cuenca de la Esperanza, Laguna de Yuriria and its Area of Influence, Las Fuentes, Las Musas, Parque Metropolitano, Pena Alta, Pinal del Zamorano, Neutla Dam and its area of ​​influence, Silva Dam and its surrounding areas, Siete Luminarias Volcanic Region, Sierra de Lobos, Sierra de Penjamo and Sierra de los Agustinos

Guanajuato has 36 ANPs, located in 34 municipalities and covering an area slightly larger than 631,756.62 hectares, equivalent to 20.63% of the territory of Guanajuato. Of these 36 ANPs, 23 are under state jurisdiction and 3 are federal, two of them Voluntarily Destined Areas for Conservation –ADVC-, 7 municipal and 3 ADVC.
