International-class drivers competing in the “World Rally Championship in Guanajuato” will test their cars on agave fields in San Clemente in Romita, prior to this important Sports Tourism event that will take place from March 16 to 19.
For the first time, Rally Guanajuato México and Romita -with the support of the Guanajuato Secretary of Tourism- announce “Monday Test” to be held on March 13, an event where around 20 of the 32 cars will be tuned registered (so far) to this competition that will be held in the municipalities of León, Silao and Guanajuato capital, a World Heritage City.
This was presumed by Patrick Suberville, director of Rally Guanajuato Mexico; Oswaldo Ponce Granados, mayor of Romita; Francisco Javier Damián Gómez, Romita Tourism Coordinator; in the company of Francisco Javier Valverde Polín, General Director of Tourism Development of the Secretary of Tourism of Guanajuato.
The Rally was first held in 1979, then it moved to Leon in 1998 and the WRC joined in 2004. The 2007 edition was the shortest rally in WRC history, with a total distance of less than 850 kilometres. Of course, it consisted of 366 kilometers against the clock, that is, more than 43% of the test was timed.
After this interesting history of the Rally, this year 2023 the Rally returns to Guanajuato -after 3 years absent caused by the pandemic- with a new tourist and sports event that will benefit the communities of Romita; Romitenses will have a point of sale for gastronomic products and others.
“Romita has adequate land to fine tune the competition cars; this destination, with its agave fields and tequila identity, is incredible. This experience that the pilots and their crews will live in Romita, one of the 8 municipalities with a designation of origin for Tequila, will be very pleasant”, assured Valverde Polín.
“Monday Test” is the start of all the activities of a week of Rally. “For the drivers it is very important to test the cars and have them ready. We are very happy to do something new, to introduce new regions of Guanajuato. It has a very important significance that Romita is located within a tequila area, it seems to Europeans a representative image of Mexico; for them, being able to participate in agave fields is something they have never done”, explained Patrick Suberville, director of Rally Guanajuato México.
The pilots who signed up for this test will take several laps in their car to detect the corrections and adjustments that their vehicles will have so that they are at “100”.
The Mayor of Romita, said that the municipality awaits the Rally and the visitors who want to be present at this free event that is open to the public.
Testing will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m.
“The gates of the dam will be established for the service area, then we will go up the Camino Antiguo to the community of Los Ángeles until we reach the community of El Polvorín, and then we go up towards the cross, and later we go down towards the stream to finish near of the old road in the community of Carmen de Sánchez. Later we returned by the road and joined the community of San Clemente again, we would pass in front of the community’s Parish and return to the service area”, informed Francisco Javier Damián Gómez, Tourism Coordinator of Romita.
Parking lots will be set up in the area, one next to the dam and another on the soccer field of the community.
