The dragon, a symbol associated in Chinese culture with courage, nobility and fortune, multiplied on Saturday through the streets of the city of Guanajuato during the parade for the III Happy Chinese New Year Costume Contest, Year of the Dragon.
The contest, which brought together more than twenty participants, was convened by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Mexico and the State Institute of Culture, as part of the Mas Mundo in Guanajuato program, which since last year has invited to dialogue with artistic and cultural expressions from other latitudes.
Fabrics, paper mache and recycled materials were combined with ideas in the costumes that were admired on a tour that started from the Plaza de la Paz and wound through Luis Gonzalez, Sopena and Campanero streets; ending at Plaza Allende, where the evaluation by the jury was made.
Antonio Armando Oliva from Guanajuato was the winner in the individual category of the contest; while children in charge of the “Friendly Dragon” costume won the highest award in the collective category.
The competition jury was headed by Lan Xiaozeng, in charge of Cultural Affairs of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Mexico and Arturo Lopez Rodriguez, director of Museums and Visual Arts of the IEC, and Alba Rocio Marmolejo, head of Articulation and Innovation of the Secretary of Education of Guanajuato and Danna Paola Gomez Lopez, queen of the city of Guanajuato; and Olga Leticia Padilla and Edgar Gallardo, vice president and secretary, respectively, of CANIRAC Guanajuato.
